Alleen Woodbury (1903-2003) "Willows" linocut, Woodbury was a student of Birger Sandzén, born in 1903 – likely in Newton, Kansas. She was the daughter of another Sandzén student, Edith K. Woodbury. About 1920, Alleen began attending school at the Chicago Art Institute, then transferred to the University of Kansas, and, finally, Bethany College in Lindsborg. She attended classes taught by Birger Sandzén from the Fall of 1922 through the Spring of 1927. In that year, she accepted a position to teach alongside Sandzén at Stephens College in Columbia, Missouri. Later, she married John Mitchell, stopped painting and printmaking, and spent much of her married life in New York State (near Rochester and Fineview). She retired to Washington State and died in 2003 at the age of 100.
