Domjan, Joseph (1907-1992) "Julia" 18/12 and "Lullaby" 5/20, 2 color wood cuts, both pencil signed in lower right, both in good condition, "Lullaby" has no mat or frame, "Julia" has mat only, image size for both: 20 x 14 inches. Joseph Domjan was born in Budapest in 1907. His life was as varied and dramatic as his work. At the age of thirteen he was already at work as an engine fitter and foundry worker. Deprived of his job during the world-wide economic depression of the 1930s, he went abroad. After a 10,000 mile walking tour of Italy, Germany and France he decided to become an artist.Domjan studied for seven years at the Academy of Fine Arts in Budapest. In 1948, he organized his first one-man show of color woodcuts of Scandinavia.Thereafter, he participated in the International Color Woodcut Exhibition organized in 1950 by the Victoria and Albert Museum in London. This exhibit traveled to the United States. In 1955 he had a large retrospective exhibition in the Ernst Museum, Budapest. As a result he was invited to China where he had seventeen one-man shows.In 1957 Domjan settled with his family in New York City and had one-man shows there. In the years which followed he had many exhibitions and his work was collected by major museums and collectors. His work received numerous awards and prizes including the title "Master of the Color Woodcut, " awarded once every hundred years in China.
