Charles Rogers (1911-1987) "Day Before Spring" lithogrpah, pencil signed in lower right, good condition, image size: 7 x 9.5 inches. A natural affinity helped Charles B. Rogers become a superb interpreter of the Great American West. He was born on the high plains near the north end of the old Chisholm Trail. His grandparents were pioneers. As a boy he played in buffalo wallows just a rock throwing distance from the back steps. For years he slept on the ground as he searched the plateaus, studied the skies, and sketched the purple hills throughout the west.At seventeen Rogers designed his own etching press and within four years was accepted by jury to show in an international exhibit. He was one of the youngest ever elected to the pre-eminent Society of American Etchers.For ten years Mr. Rogers gave college students the benefit of his knowledge and experience. He studied and worked on several awards in the form of scholarships and fellowships including one to the National Academy of Design in New York City, two at the Tiffany Foundation on Long Island, and two at the Huntington Hartford Foundation in California. After earning his Master of Fine Arts degree at the California College of Arts and Crafts in Oakland, the artist returned to Kansas where he served as head of the School of Art at his Alma Mater.Mr. Rogers was appointed Resident Manager and Assistant Director of the Huntington Hartford Art colony where he served for more than a decade.A creative worker in all visual media, Charles B. He was born January 27, 1911, in Great Bend, Kansas. He and Ruth Walker married December 27, 1954, at Las Vegas, Nevada. He attended Holy Apostle Episcopal Church, Ellsworth. Survivors included his wife, Ruth; a son, Robert Rogers; and a brother, William Rogers.* * * * * * * * * * *Charles B. Rogers, was born January 27, 1911 at Great Bend, Kansas. As a child, Rogers dreamed of becoming an artist. During his childhood he had little encouragement to pursue his dream. After graduation from high school he set out to visit the best art galleries in the United States. Rogers received a scholarship to the national Academy of Art in New York City. He later studied at Bethany College, Lindsborg, Kansas, where he assisted world renowned artist Birger Sandz?n, who was head of the art department. When Sandz?n decided to retire, Charles B. Rogers, now a graduate and instructor, was chosen to succeed Sandz?n as head of the Bethany art department.During World War II, Rogers was a member of the Coast Guard for four years. After the war, he studied at the California College of Arts and Crafts. Rogers then returned to Kansas, teaching at Bethany for six years. After his stint at Bethany, he returned to California in the 1950s. In 1968, Rogers returned to Kansas and opened his studio/museum/gallery in the two-story American House hotel in downtown Ellsworth, Kansas.Rogers has 127 works of art in the Barton County Community College’s permanent art collection.From the Oak Street Mansion ? owned by Roland Sabates:Charles Rogers is one of Kansas’s most interesting and unique artists. He earned the nickname, "the Kansan, " when, during the Depression, he twice walked across the country observing and sketching the scenery.He was born near Great Bend, Kansas, on January 27, 1911, and had an illustrious career. Rogers earned his first degree at Bethany College in Lindsborg, and later was selected for fellowships at the California College of Arts and Crafts (where he earned his M.F.A.) and the National Academy of Arts in New York.He served in the Coast Guard during World War II. After the war, he returned to Bethany College to teach in 1948, becoming the director of the art department after Birger Sandz?n retired. Between 1954 and 1966, he was manager and assistant director of the Huntington Hartford art colony in California.In 1968, Roger’s returned to Kansas and purchased the historic American House Hotel in Ellsworth, which he turned into a gallery and studio for his art. Rogers painted western landscapes and was particularly known for his lithographs. He died in Ellsworth in 1987.
