Doran Barham (1926-1999) untitled white house, watercolor, signed in lower left, good condition, image size: 15.25 x 11.25 inches. Born in Lindsborg, Kansas, November 22, 1926.Parents were Doris and Harold Barham, graduates of Bethany College, and his father was a Chemistry Professor there several years. Lived in Manhattan, Kansas, attending elementary and high school, leaving to serve two years in the Navy and returning for a B.S. in architecture at Kansas State University in 1950. Early training in watercolor began as a student of architecture at Kansas State University where first classes were under Professor John Helm. Employed by architectural firm of Thomas and Harris, Wichita, Kansas, in 1950 where he continued for eight years and did many of the firm’s architectural illustrations. Opened home studio in 1958 doing free lance architectural illustration for architects in Kansas and surrounding states. Employed by firm of Oblinger-Smith, Landscape Architects and City Planners from 1970 through 1975 as an Architectural Illustrator and Designer.Reopened home studio in 1977 entering the field of fine art and primarily working in transparent watercolor. Studied under Bill Dickerson and others at the Wichita Art Association. Subject matter is varied with people, places, and events of the Kansas scene being a large part of his work although surrounding mountain states frequently appear in paintings. Architectural background often evident in choice of subject matter and attention to detail. Paintings have a soft warm appeal and occasionally with a touch of humor.Exhibited through Wichita Gallery of Fine Art in Fourth National Financial Center in Wichita, KS. Member of Kansas Watercolor Society and the Artists Guild of Wichita. Won awards as early as high school and numerous ones in the Kansas Watercolor shows with paintings included in various private collections.
