Raymer Society Consignment Art Auction
Lot 80:
This original watercolor by artist Paula Smith is titled "Coronado Heights". In good condition, this piece measures 9" x 13.25" and is signed by the artist in the lower left corner. Although her formal art education was in Art History in a New York City college, Paula Smith’s life as a Kansan did not begin until the 1960’s when she moved to Wichita and began immediately to enjoy and paint the Kansas landscape and its wildlife. She notes, "Three artists have been a great influence on my life as an artist. The first two were a Latvian couple, Janis Sternbergs and his wife Erika, who were Displaced Persons living in Germany at the time my family lived there. Their friendship brought about many hours in our home. Janis Sternbergs was a master engraver, and his wife Erika was a skilled portrait painter. "The third influence on my life as an artist is Maleta Forsberg who has been a friend and companion for more than 30 years." Paula and Maleta have been painting the yearly seasons of the Kansas countryside for many years. Maleta also encouraged Paula to become an active member of Kansas art organizations, and to exhibit in several galleries.
