This original encaustic by artist John Bashor is features a still life with mandolin and is in good condition. The icanvas measures 17.75" x 30" and is signed "John Bashor ’60" – lower right. in the lower right. John W. Bashor was born on March 11, 1926 in Newton, Kansas. He grew up in Florence, Kansas. In 1937, his family moved to Topeka, Kansas. During his childhood days his father Bill taught his only child to fish in Kansas ponds. From an early age John made structures, gadgets, planes and boats. As time passed the toys changed to objects carefully fabricated and made with obsessive craftsmanship to be better and more beautiful than "store bought." Above all he loved the machine, the thing that performed for its own sake or did a job. As a young artist, Howard Church, who, in his early forties was head of the Art Department of Washburn University in Topeka, saw in John’s work potential and capacity. Church arranged a special student status whereby John could take college level painting courses while he was still a high school student.After the war, and graduate school at the University of Iowa, John Bashor began his first teaching at the Menninger Foundation and also as a part-time art instructor at Washburn University. In 1953 John moved to begin thirteen years at Bethany College. The B.F.A. degree program under Bashor, and the small faculty he later headed as Chairman of the Department, produced many talented and widely recognized artists. In 1966 John left Bethany to accept the directorship of the School of Art at Montana State University. He also continued to teach as a full-time professor until retirement eleven years later in 1977. Today, John devotes a major portion of his time to studio work and enjoying the "big sky country." He and his wife, Rosemary Laughlin Bashor, continue to live in Bozeman and also Bouse, Arizona.
