Fern Cole (1917-1979) was born in Dwight, Kansas, in 1917. She studied painting at Bethany College in Lindsborg, Kansas, with Birger Sandzén, a Swedish-born émigré who specialized in western and Midwestern landscapes, painted in a vibrant Post-Impressionist*-influenced palette. In 1946 she moved with her husband, John Cole, to Akron, Ohio, where she gained prominence as both an artist and an educator. She was active in art education at the Akron Art Institute (now the Akron Art Museum) and the Revere School System.

Multi-talented and versatile, Cole worked throughout her career in a wide variety of media, including painting, ceramics*, and enameling. Although her earliest known work was in painting, by the 1950s she was working primarily as an enamelist*. Through her friendship with Cleveland-based enamelist Mary Ellen McDermott, she became acquainted with the enameling scene fostered by the Cleveland Institute of Art and the Cleveland Museum of Art.
