Winter landscape with trees and snow is a watercolor by Carl Peterson, in good condition, signed "C. Peterson -79," measuring 15.5×19.25. Total dimensiona are 23.5x29x1.5. Carl William Peterson (1919-2009) was born in Fremont, Kansas. His love of art was greatly influenced by his high school art teacher, Elise Penner. Carl graduated from Lindsborg High School and studied art at Bethany College under the teaching of Swedish-American artist Birger Sandzen. He graduated from Bethany College in 1942 with a B.F.A. degree and received a M.F.A. degree from Colorado University, Boulder, Colorado, in 1951. While at Colorado University he studied lithography. A few of those examples still survive. Further studies in drawing and watercolor were pursued at Columbia University in New York. Besides being a pupil of Birger Sandzén while a student at Bethany College, Peterson attended watercolor workshops taught by Charles Kingham and Jim Hamil. Following graduation from Bethany College, Peterson taught art in the Osborne, Hays and Salina, Kansas, public school systems. In 1963 Carl became assistant and later Co-Director of the Birger Sandzén Memorial Gallery, serving in that capacity until 1981. After retiring, he remained active as a studio artist specializing in watercolor painting, with an occasional oil, primarily Kansas Landscapes.
