Weddle, Don, (1923-2017) oil on board, signature: Weddle lower right, "Pensive Little Swede", image dimensions:5 x 4, total dimensions:7.25 x 6.25 x 1.5, weight:0.4lb Maurice Donald Weddle was born in Miami, Florida in1923, but spent the majority of his youth in Lindsborg, Kansas benefiting from the art and music culture that was flourishing in Lindsborg at that time. After-school and summers often found him with friends moving about the town, visiting various craftsmen, from the famed artist from Sweden, Birger Sandzen, to the woodcarver Anton Pearson. That Lindsborg provided a fertile soil for budding artists and musicians was not lost on Donald. With notable teachers and artisans like Sandzen, painter Oscar Gunnerson, woodcarver Anton Person, cabinetmaker John Altenborg, pianist Oscar Torsen, Dr. Hagbard Brase, and artist Lester Raymer. Donald subtly and yet intentionally became drawn to this world of artist’s and creativity. After serving a distinguished military career in the United States Navy Reserve as a Lieutenant (jg) from 1943-1946, he pursued art education at Bethany College in Lindsborg graduating with a BA in 1947, BAE Art Institute of Chicago in1951 and a MFA from the University of New Mexico. His additional studies continued at Wichita State University.
