Dolores Runbeck (1998-1994) oil on canvas, Mexican woman, unsigned, good condition, 24×20.25 inches. Dolores Gaston Runbeck was born in 1898 at Atchinson, Kansas. She studied painting under Birger Sandzén at Bethany College from the Spring of 1923 to the Spring of 1928. She earned a Bachelor of Painting degree. She also became a colleague of Dr. Sandzén on the Art faculty teaching from 1926 to 1929.Dolores established her studio in Lindsborg, where she welcomed visitors and painted in watercolors and oils and made lithographs. Her subjects include floral still lifes, landscapes, religious and symbolic compositions, portraits, and expressionistic abstracts. She is especially remembered for her excellent renditions of flowers in watercolors.Scholastically in addition she undertook studies at The Applied Arts School of Chicago; The Arts Students’ League, New York, and The Chicago Art Institute. Dolores also had master classes with Arthur Guptill, Frederick Taubes, Harry Sternberg and Frank Reilly.She was a charter member of the Prairie Watercolor Painters – and a member of the Prairie Print Makers Society and the Kansas Federation of Art. Mrs. Runbeck was the first president of the Bethany College Alumni Association; the first woman to be named to the Bethany College Board of Directors; National Alumni president of the Delta Phi Delta Honorary Art Fraternity, and the organizer and first president of the Lindsborg Artists’ Guild.
