Description

Lathrop, Greg, stoneware, large jar. signed Lathrop on the bottom, good condition, no chips or cracks, jar size: 10 x 8 x 7.5 inches. Lathrop lives and maintains a ceramics studio in Derby, KS "I first became interested in making pottery In high school under the mentorship of my high school pottery teacher, Terry Aikens. He developed in me a genuine love for the art and gave me the skills to continue on my own once I graduated. Although I worked for Sedgwick County in Kansas for over 20 years, I continued creating pottery on the side and began selling my pieces at nearby art festivals. In 2006, I chose to retire from the county and pursue my pottery full time. With the help of my wife, Jennie, we have built a strong business thru traveling to many different states for art festivals all through the year. Our pottery is also sold in the Pottery Shop at Silver Dollar City outside Branson, MO, at the Whispering Pines Gallery in Grand Lake, CO, and at the FABA Art Gallery in Pagosa Springs, CO.I prefer to create by throwing on a wheel but do limited hand-built pieces, also. I use two clays; a white and a dark stoneware. I mix all of my own glaze recipes and have a couple of trademarks that mark each piece. I especially enjoy making one-of-a-kind pieces which I then hand-carve. Because I don’t follow any patterns in my carving but do all of it "free hand", no two pieces will ever be exactly the same. I have a large kiln I and a couple of friends built outside my studio as well as an electric kiln for bisque firing pieces before they are glazed and high-fired."-Greg Lathrop
