Description
Pharo, John "Jack" (1902-1991) 1965 stoneware, large jar, signed on bottom, good condition, no chips or cracks, jar size: 9.5 x 6.5 x 6.5 inches. Pharo, John Leland, "Jack”. b. Belpre, KS, 1902; d. Manhattan, KS, July 8, 1991. Ceramist. Lithographer. Painter. Teacher. Pupil of William Dickerson, B.J.O. Nordfeldt, and E. Bruce Moore. While working for the U.S. Post Office, he joined the Wichita Art Assoc. School as a volunteer in the 1930s, became a ceramics instructor in 1947 and head of the ceramics department in 1949, a position he held for 26 years. He dug and processed his own clay in order to have total control over the pottery process. Pharo worked on multiple wheels and fired pieces three or four times. He retired from the Wichita Art Assoc. in 1973. Awards: Medal of Honor, Wichita Art Assoc.
